Why does God allow evil, sickness, pain, war and suffering?

Many people have wondered why God does not stop the horrors and evils this world is filled with. Why is there war, poverty, sickness, deception, and other evils of many kinds? Why is there untimely death, accidents, hunger, children without parents, people without homes? Why are there wicked rulers who send people to war against each other? Earthquakes, volcano eruptions, lightnings, floodings, horrible storms? Why are there poisonous plants, violent and deadly animals, viruses, dangerous bacteria and parasites? In short: Why does God allow evil, sickness, pain, war and suffering? Is he not almighty, and in control of things?

Why there is evil: Right now, this planet is not a part of God’s Reign. It is still in rebel hands.

That is one of the main reasons for all the evils here on Earth. Today, this planet still remains under the control of wicked spirit rebels and their fleshly cronies.

For some people, this might be a problematic matter, because they have been caused to think that it is the true God who is in Heaven who controls this world (the planet Earth), and even that the earthly rulers and governments are “appointed by God” and “continually in his service”. (Certain New Testament passages might make the reader think so.) But, it should be easy for anyone to see that this world is still in the hands of wicked powers.

(The article noa010.htm contains a study on the Reign or Kingdom of God – what, when and where it really is. The article nwa021.htm has some notes on this world’s present rulers.)

Hebrews 2:8, ‘we do not yet see all things put under him’.

Some people might find this matter regarding the control of this world a bit confusing. On one hand, we read:

Matthew 28:18 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. (NKJV)

And then, on the other hand, we read such things as this:

Hebrews 2:8 […] For in that He put all in subjection under him, He left nothing that is not put under him. But now we do not yet see all things put under him. (NKJV, highlighting added)

“Not yet”. Several scriptures indicate that wicked powers will remain in control of this planet, all the way to the still future time when Jesus returns and puts the Reign of God into effect even here.

It is obvious that when it comes to the Earth, the authority and power which Jesus referred to, Matthew 28:18, was on the “legal”, “juridical” level. Jesus was given the right to the rule of this planet. But, he has not yet taken that right into use. As of now, this planet is not God’s world. Jesus is not reigning here yet; wicked spirit rebels are.

The Bible shows that it is only after the seventh angel has sounded his trumpet, Revelation 11:15, that “the kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever”. That has not happened yet. That is the reason why this world is in a miserable state.

Again: It is only when Jesus returns and captures and destroys the rebels who today control the planet Earth, that it and its inhabitants will be freed from wickedness, evil and suffering. When Jesus comes, he will bring God’s Reign into effect even here on Earth. (God’s Reign – some use the word Kingdom – is based in Heaven, and we can assume that it rules the entire universe. But as of now, the Earth is still in rebel hands. And so, God’s Reign is not in effect here.)

The Bible has a lot to say in regard to how things will change, after Jesus’ return. It contains several prophecies concerning those coming, happy times.

The article noa010.htm has more on God’s Reign.

Why has God allowed this?

A short way to answer that question is that we do not know. Again, the Bible does not explain these things in detail or in depth. But, several things in the Scriptures make it clear that today, wicked rebel powers control this planet.

More: The Bible tells us that there was a war in Heaven, after which wicked spirits who were in rebellion against God, were thrown out of Heaven, to the planet Earth (Revelation 12:7).

(A note: Some have thought that that war has not taken place yet, but a closer study of that matter indicates that it most probably occurred when Jesus returned to Heaven. After that, Satan and his followers were thrown out. To the Earth.)

Now, how did mankind end up in this situation of pain and suffering because of a fight between God and rebel spirits? We do not know, but we can be certain that God is not happy with this situation, and that he is not delaying things without a reason but is working to make things good.

In that connection, let us consider the question, why was it that Jesus the son of God had to become a mortal here on Earth and then give his life, in place of others? Apparently, some people have been caused to believe that it was God the Father who demanded the death penalty on all sinning humans, and that Jesus just barely managed to rush in between and stop the Father from destroying all of mankind. But, the Bible says something very different. We read:

John 3:16 “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. 17 “For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved. (NKJV)

In all simplicity: It must have been the Accuser (the Diabolos, Satan the Devil) who demanded death on humans. But Jesus, by giving his life in the place of others, stripped the Accuser and other wicked “principalities” of their (legal, juridical) powers over mankind. (See Hebrews 2:14, Colossians 2:15, et cetera.)

We do not and cannot know the background – that is, we do not know the details regarding the agreements or “judgment seats” that eventually regulated the “legal things” connected to that matter, in the heavenly sphere. It appears that there must have been some binding agreements which had given Satan and some with him, some “legal rights” (power, jurisdiction) over this planet and its inhabitants.

When Jesus had made his Sacrifice, that power was taken away from Satan. But, that was only “de jure”, only in the legal sense. On the practical level (“de facto”), this world still remains in the hands of spirit rebels. Again, it is only when Jesus returns, that mankind and the Earth will be freed from those wicked ones, and from evil and suffering.

Another reason for evil and suffering is that man is not complete yet – something is lacking.

God did not create humans as robots or automatons. He created us as beings with a free will. And, since this planet is still controlled by wicked spirits and their fleshly cronies, humans are deceived and caused to harm themselves and each other. Also: Through deception, humans are kept away from the true God and his son Jesus.

What mankind needs, is not only liberation from the hands of wicked spirit powers, but also the guidance of the true God and his son Jesus, through the Holy Spirit.

Now, virtually all churches claim that their members receive the Holy Spirit from God. Well, some churches note the clear fact that the world at large does not have the Holy Spirit, but then they claim that their own members are an exception to that. But, what if we take a hard and honest look at how things actually are: Are there any true signs of the fruit of the Holy Spirit to be seen in this world?

So, another major factor regarding why there are so many problems in this world, is that people do not have God’s Spirit but are instead influenced, swayed and deceived by wicked spirit powers. Again, it is only when Jesus returns, that the situation on this planet will be changed for the better.

Some ‘odd items’.

Who invented and created harmful bacteria, viruses and parasites, and so on? We do not know. Many people have been caused to think that God has personally created all things that exist on this planet. But, is it so?

Today, mankind is modifying the genetics of plants and animals. Even intelligent spirits, including the rebel angels, could have done such things. The facts are that we simply do not know who really created, and for what purpose, the harmful things and sicknesses and other things that cause so much suffering and affliction.

Some have claimed that God “created diseases as a punishment for sinning men”, but that is the same as claiming that God purposely planned and created such things as malaria, leprosy, cancer, tuberculosis and all the rest, in order to torture humans. Does that sound likely?

What about earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, storms, floodings, lightnings, famine and other such things? Did God purposely create or cause those things, in order to subject mankind to suffering, death and destruction? It is reasonable to assume that he did not. Again, the problem is that at this present time, this planet is not a part of God’s Kingdom (Reign). At times, God has intervened in the matters of this planet, sometimes even in an extremely strong manner, but again, as of now, this is not God’s world.

Summary.

This world (the planet Earth) is still controlled by wicked spirit rebels. That is a major cause for the evils here. It is for that reason – for freeing this world from those wicked ones – that Jesus will return.

God does not force anyone to act in a just and righteous way; he has created us humans with a free will. The problem is that mankind is under the influence of wicked spirits, and lacks the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

The servants of the Wicked one control this world through several means; one of them is religion. Hundreds of millions of people have been sent to war against each other, and have then been maimed or killed, often “in the name of God”. Others have been enslaved and abused and kept ignorant and in poverty. Yes, we humans have a “free will”, but as things are today, most of us do not stand a chance against the spiritual and other deception that this world is filled with. It is only when Jesus returns, that mankind will be freed from the wicked powers who today control this planet, and from the sorrows and evils caused by them. After that, there will no longer be wars or other such troubles.

What about all those who have lived and died under these sad circumstances, without ever having a real chance to know and understand the right ways or to receive everlasting life? The Bible shows that some time after Jesus’ return, there will be a “judgment period”, for humans who have lived in the past. Certain scriptures indicate that in the future, all humans who have lived but still remain dead, will be raised up to life again (to begin with, mortal life), and will then finally have a real chance to know the right way of living, and the means to live in the right way. (Yes, all will be judged, but it appears that in many cases, perhaps most, the resurrected humans will be judged to something similar to what we today call “probation”.) The article nta061.htm has some notes on the time of judgment which is to come. The article nba080.htm considers the matter or resurrection.
